This Week's Cougar Cubs Highlights

Hello VES Families,

This past week we had a lot going on at Vicenza Elementary School. Between summative testing and Teacher Appreciation Week, there was a great deal happening, and it's encouraging to see our community come together in many ways.

During Teacher Appreciation Week, our staff felt supported by students and parents. We would like to extend a thank you to our PTSA for the time and generosity they helped show in celebrating our teachers and faculty. The daily treats and kind gestures were noticed and appreciated, especially during such a full week.

At the same time, our school worked together to support summative testing for students in grades 3–5. Coordinating testing while keeping instruction and student needs at the forefront takes flexibility and teamwork. I appreciate the professionalism and cooperation shown by everyone, and I am grateful for the way our staff kept students as the priority throughout.

A shout out to the VES faculty and staff for the long hours, the extra effort, and the dedication you bring to our school each day. Your commitment to our students and support to one another makes a meaningful difference in our school culture. I am proud to work alongside such a strong team.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Warmly,

Mr. Caballero

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Important for Children

Proper hydration is critical for students to maintain cognitive function, concentration, and energy levels.

recommendations often around 8 cups daily (64 oz) or more

Students should carry a reusable water bottle, drink regularly rather than only when thirsty, and choose water over sugary drinks to support focus and overall health.

Key Hydration Tips for Students

  • Carry a Bottle: Keep a reusable water bottle in bags to make taking sips between classes or during study sessions easy.
  • Drink by Schedule: Set reminders to drink hourly or pair water consumption with daily routines like meal times and before/after school.
  • Monitor Urine Color: A clear or light yellow color indicates proper hydration, while dark yellow can indicate the need for more fluids.
  • Hydrate During Study: Sipping water while studying can combat tiredness and improve concentration.
  • Eat Hydrating Foods: Include water-rich snacks in packed lunches, such as cucumbers, watermelon, grapes, and oranges.

Daily Fluid Recommendations (Ages 5-18)

  • 5-8 year olds: Approximately 40 fl oz (5 cups).
  • 9-13 year olds: Approximately 54-61 fl oz (6-7cups).
  • Physical Activity: Students should drink extra fluids before, during, and after exercise to replace sweat losses. [1, 2]

Benefits of Staying Hydrated

  • Improved Brain Function: Even mild dehydration can impair cognitive performance and concentration.
  • Better Energy Levels: Prevents lethargy and reduces headaches caused by lack of water.
  • Enhanced Focus: Proper hydration helps students stay alert during lectures and exams.

What to Drink

  • Water: The best, most cost-effective option for all hydration needs.
  • Milk: A good source for meeting daily fluid goals, particularly for younger students.
  • Limit Caffeine/Sugar: While coffee, tea and energy drinks are popular, they can have diuretic effects and increase the need for water.

Writing, Cooking, and Celebrating Together

Ms. Ahearn Er's 2nd grade class stayed busy and connected with hands‑on learning and joyful community moments this April. Families gathered for the 3rd Annual 2nd Grade BBQ, strengthening school‑home connections, while students explored their creativity through imaginative writing projects. In the classroom, young scientists and chefs even made their own yogurt and experimented with fresh fruit flavoring, learning through doing and having fun along the way.
