Vicenza Complex Celebrates Successful 3rd Annual STEAM Day With Strong Cross-Grade Collaboration
VICENZA, Italy — The Vicenza school complex celebrated its third annual complex-wide STEAM Day, bringing together elementary and middle school students for a hands-on day of exploration in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The event highlighted the community’s commitment to interdisciplinary learning and meaningful collaboration across grade levels.
This year’s STEAM Day featured an expanded schedule of interactive sessions, including new activities such as Watercolors and Super Straw Airplanes, alongside returning favorites like STEAM Idol and Tallest Tower. These activities encouraged creativity, inquiry, and problem-solving while providing students with opportunities to engage deeply with STEAM concepts.
A key focus of the event was the strengthened partnership between Vicenza Elementary School and Vicenza Middle School. Elementary students visited the middle school, where they participated in reading and math sessions facilitated by middle school students. These interactions supported academic learning while promoting leadership, communication skills, and cross-age mentorship.
Elementary teachers praised the experience and the positive impact it had on their students.
“Thank you for giving us the opportunity to interact with your students and feel the joy of math,” said Penelope Ahearn Er of Vicenza Elementary School. “My class really got a lot out of being with the middle school students. They felt special and were inspired by the kindness, patience, and fun of your students.”
Middle school staff also noted the strong sense of community the partnership fostered.
“It was rewarding to see students across grade levels learning together,” said STEAM Day Coordinator Monica Funston of Vicenza Middle School. “Purposeful service learning enriches content understanding and strengthens our sense of community.”
Teachers across the complex collaborated to organize and facilitate the day’s sessions, ensuring a smooth, engaging, and inclusive learning experience for all participants. Their creativity and teamwork were essential to the day’s success.
Planning is already underway for next year’s STEAM Day. Organizers are hopeful that Vicenza High School will rejoin the event, creating an even more comprehensive and inclusive celebration of learning across all grade levels within the Vicenza complex.
