Read Across America Week at Vicenza Elementary
Vicenza Elementary School recently celebrated Read Across America Week from March 2–6, joining schools across the United States in promoting the joy of reading and encouraging students to become lifelong readers. Led nationally by the National Education Association, Read Across America highlights the importance of literacy and the power of books to inspire young minds.
Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of reading‑focused activities designed to celebrate books and build excitement around reading. Each day, the school announced "Drop Everything and Read," giving students time to pause their schedules and enjoy a book for at least twenty minutes. Classrooms across the school could be seen filled with quiet readers as students relaxed and explored new stories.
One of the highlights of the week was the Parade of Nations. Students proudly walked the parade route wearing colors and symbols representing countries from around the world. Families and other students lined the route to cheer them on, creating a festive celebration that connected reading, culture, and community. 4th Grade Video
Another special event was Breakfast with Books, where parents and guest readers visited the school to read with students and share favorite stories. The visit gave students the chance to experience reading together with adults and helped reinforce the idea that reading is something that can be enjoyed both at school and at home.
Students also had the opportunity to meet visiting author Stephan D. Fales. During his visit, he shared insights about the writing process and explained how everyday experiences can inspire stories. Fales, a former Air Force member and elementary school teacher, spoke with students about his book Welcome Home, Charlie! and the real‑life inspirations behind the characters. Students enjoyed asking questions about writing and learning how authors turn ideas into books.
The week ended with smiles, stories, and a renewed excitement for reading throughout the school. Events like Read Across America help remind students that books can open doors to imagination, knowledge, and new adventures.
